How to Use Math Exit Tickets in Your Middle School Classroom
Exit tickets can be a helpful tool in your middle school math classroom. Not only can exit tickets be a quick and easy way to assess your students’ understanding of a math topic, but they can also help students reflect on their learning and help you connect with your middle school students.
You can use index cards or sticky notes as an exit ticket, but you can also grab my ready to use exit ticket templates.
Here are a few different ideas on how to use math exit tickets in your classroom:
Have students solve a problem from the day’s lesson. This works awesome with sticky notes. Simply post a problem on the board. Have students solve it on a sticky note or index card. Then have them either post it on the door or hand it to you as they leave the classroom. Sometimes I have students put their name on it, and other times I don’t. The goal with this type of exit ticket is to see what percentage of students understood the lesson.
Weekly Check In: Help students reflect on their learning by reflecting on something they are struggling with and something they are proud of; a success. At the end of the week, simply hand out an index card for students to write a struggle and a success.
Before A Test: In the days leading up to a test, have students answer questions such as
On a scale from 1-5, how confident are you in the material from this chapter?
What problems do you need more practice with?
What will you do to study for the test?
Fun Questions: End your math class with a fun favorite thing question (candy, book, movie, etc.) or a this or that question (sweet or salty?). These types of questions help you create connections with your students.
QCC: Every once in a while give students a card to write a QCC or a Questin, Comment, or Concern. This is more of an open-ended exit ticket but gives students a chance to share a question they may not want to ask out loud or anything else that is on their mind. This is another opportunity for you to create connections.
I love how versatile exit tickets can be in a middle school math classroom. I hope you found these ideas helpful. What other ways have you used exit tickets in your math class? Comment below.
